7/1/10: Budget Negotiations Result in Broken Promises

"The actions of the Assembly majority and the inaction of the Senate Majority share one sad thing in common - broken promises to New York's families and businesses.

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and the majority of the Assembly's Democratic Conference flat out killed any chance to enact a sustainable property tax cap that would have delivered real relief to taxpayers - in spite of recent polling that 76 percent of New Yorkers favor a statewide property tax cap.

Senate Majority Leader John Sampson had promised 'no new taxes' for months but is now poised to push a proposal that will slam New Yorkers with increased taxes on basic necessities like clothes.

The majorities in both houses turned their backs to the business community when they stripped away hundreds of millions of dollars in vital tax credits.

Additionally, this budget increases state spending by $1.7 billion over last year's bloated budget and adds $950 million in new taxes and $300 million in new fees on top of the $8 billion we were hit with last year. In doing so, the legislative majorities are making fools of everyone in New York that continues to stay and pay their taxes and support their family.

This weekend's firework displays will look like a Roman candle compared to what's going to happen on November 2. Voters across the state are fed up the tax-and-spend policies of the legislative majorities. Making a mockery of our government is not going to bode well for those that voted for this budget.

Judgment Day is drawing near and many members of the legislature have made it perfectly that they'd rather side with their majority leader's than with their constituents."
